What is it?
The story in Sopa, or Sopa: Tale of the Stolen Potato, concerns a boy who is supposed to help his grandma with some cooking, but when he goes to fetch some potatoes they are stolen by a mysterious frog wearing a hat. The boy sets out after the frog and comes to the frogs’ marketplace, one of the game’s two main areas; the other is inside a giant fish. Sopa plays like a point and click adventure, though you move the character and explore more freely than in traditional games in that genre. You need to find objects and figure out how to use them – bring them to certain places or characters, talk to characters, and do some more or less simple puzzle solving.
Is it player-friendly?
There isn’t really much in the way of of accessibility settings, or options overall, in Sopa, but in a game like this they aren’t really needed. Some of the puzzles, though not really difficult, can take some time or trial and error figuring out. Clearer hints or guides to help the player figure out what to do next would be welcome, especially if children are playing as the game in other aspects is so child-friendly.
Is it any good?
The game will take few hours to finish which is an appropriate length. The graphics and visual style are cute and colourful, the story is cute and charming as well, and the game is somewhat funny. It isn’t greatly optimized though as the graphics sometimes stutter and the loading times are relatively long. It’s not a great game, nor a bad game. A charming trifle, one might say.
