Review: Morgan: Metal Detective

What is it?

Morgan: Metal Detective is a peaceful open world exploration game that takes place on an island along the Cornwall coast in the UK. The story concerns a young woman who uses a metal detector to search for stuff that inhabitants have misplaced, and to learn more about the island. The game is played in a first-person perspective.

Is it player-friendly?

The game is relaxing and stress-free with quite simple controls, and it is quite short. On the other hand it is a bit unpolished in some parts; for example, the camera controls are slow and inadjustable, and sometimes one gets stuck in and can’t close the menus.

Is it any good?

Peaceful island exploration is a bit of a genre of its own with Morgan: Metal Detective joining titles such as Alba: A Wildlife Adventure and Dolphin Spirit: Ocean Mission to name two. Morgan: Metal Detective is smaller in scale than those games and it does have some flaws, such as the world feeling empty and some minor technical issues. The graphics are simple but colourful and pretty enough. The atmosphere is nice, that all the characters are voiced is a plus, and overall the game does what it assumedly sets out to do: offer a short, magical adventure on a Cornish island.
